Well everyone, I have been trying to wait as long as possible to write this article. I have good news and bad news about our racing season. The good news is we have had some very good events the last two months.
We had a very good double point event at Canyon in June and a good event in July also in Canyon. The double point fest in June attracted 17 drivers that made up about 7 or 8 classes in each event. Some classes were dominated by one driver, while others had two drivers swap out the wins. Terry Johnson won both times in STS2 in his RX7. Chuck Brazeau was the scourge of the event driving Brian Prima's Nissan Maxima and Chris Goebel won the ASP class. The big surprise of the day was Aaron Boltman who won the first event in SS in his Corvette, but was the fast guy of the day winning the second event in Chris Romero's Impreza. Everyone knows that Chris himself is very fast, but Aaron was just blindingly faster than everyone. Gary Fuller again set up a course that worked real well going in both directions.
The July event attracted the smallest crowd of the year as it was on a pretty hot day. Fourteen drivers braved the hot sun to go to Canyon and try out running courses in both directions and adding the time. The courses this time were a little complicated and caused people some problems, but overall it was a very good event. Aaron Boltman again was the best driver there, this time solely in his Corvette. The Miatas of Bill Countiss and Leon Stavlo were also very quick. In the old relic class Terry Johnson and I drove My old relic Datsun 240Z. I guess I had taken some slow pills or something as Terry made me look like the slow geezer I am. Anyway, I was glad to see some new people show up-Travis Baird and Jeremy Longbine-and some old veterans-Jonathan Weinbaum and Bill Threllfall-show up and participate. I hope we will see them all again.
Now I get to the Bad news section of the story. At this point we are going to have to put our season on hold for a little while. Apparently because of school football, soccer and rodeo events we will not have access to Buffalo Bowl for a while, probably for the rest of the year. Also, we could not gain access to the parking lot at the Dilla Villa stadium because the people in charge are afraid we might damage the asphalt. That is something that probably would not happen, but I guess there is a possibility it could. And at this time because there are still negotiations going on at Dalhart, we do not have access to that location either. We have been in contact with people in Dalhart that seem to believe we will probably be able to gain access in the future, probably after the sale is completed, but at this time that is not the case. Also, at this time we do not know how far in the future this might be.
I am committed to try to complete this racing season. If any place comes available, I will endeavor to do just that. If anyone knows of a good site in Amarillo, or Lubbock or anywhere close please let me know and we will investigate and try to get something accomplished. I just want to thank all of the people who have helped me this year as we have been having an incredible year up to now. Be sure to keep looking at the web site or calling officers in case an event is scheduled later. Again thanks for everything.
